Kennametal Novo aims to fill knowledge gap for more efficient manufacturing

Kennametal is offering Novo, a set of digital tools to improve manufacturing efficiency which addresses the issue of the skills gap that can arise as experienced workers retire. It streamlines access to digital knowledge through established data exchange systems, accessible via a PC application and tablet solutions.

Novo answers many questions posed by process planners, manufacturing engineers and those who want the most efficient machining strategies based on the features of their parts. With a click of a button, the user has access to all of the knowledge associated with the more than 50,000 branded Kennametal products to achieve the most efficient production solution, rather than spend hours searching catalogues. Novo works like a process planner, explains the company, working from the feature back to the machining strategies and then finds the best tools for each of the strategies. In addition, each project is tied to application data gleaned from Kennametal experts. A search for a specific Kennametal product provides the user with models and all associated inserts, adaptors and spare parts – and an optimised solution in a matter of minutes. Novo is process knowledge delivered via the Machining Cloud. It stands alongside such web-available solutions as MTConnect for data gathering and ISO 13399 for standardising tool data. Kennametal's collaborators in the project include Esprit CADCAM, Okuma, DMG/Mori Seiki, WinTool, Siemens PLM software and Zoller. Data is relevant to manufacturing engineers, production planners CNC programmers, CNC operators, design engineers, quality control, purchasing and maintenance and plant management users.
