Engis FastLap plate facing device replaces skill with technology

Engis says that an innovative plate facing device for its FastLap machine maintains lapping plate flatness by using a single point turning tool. It replaces traditional conditioning rings that require considerable operator skill to position accurately.

When plate reconditioning becomes necessary, the Engis plate facing device uses a diamond tool bit to remove the top layer of the plate and then, in a second pass, machines in a groove pattern. When not in use, the device retracts out of the work zone. Plate flatness is critical to lapping system productivity as it influences the geometry of components being processed as well as final surface finish. Increasing control over the groove pattern (macro texture) and lands (micro texture) of the plate surface ensures greater consistency in removal rates and surface finishes.
