FastLap lapping machine arrives in Engis UK showroom

1 min read

Engis UK has added a new FL15V FastLap System to its demonstration and test facility at Henley-on-Thames. The machine, designed to process a wide range of advanced materials, is now available in the UK test and prove complete lapping and polishing processes on customers’ specified sample parts.

The machine has also been fitted with Engis’s FastLap Plate Facing/Grooving Device that maintains lapping plate flatness by using a single point turning tool, replacing the use of traditional conditioning rings that require considerable operator skill in their accurate positioning.

For plate reconditioning, the Plate Facing Device uses a diamond tool bit to remove the top layer of the plate and then machines in a groove pattern in a second pass. When not in use, the device retracts out of the work zone.

Used in combination with the machine’s pneumatic pressure heads, this technology is said to consistently achieve accurate plate conditioning, controlled surface geometry and texture as well as fast, predictable stock removal - resulting in a lapping process which is easier to manage, with more repeatable results.

The company’s holistic approach to lapping includes design and manufacture not only of the lapping and polishing machines and ancillary technologies, but also of a vast selection of polishes and polishing media.

The FL-15V is available with lapping plate diameters of 15, 24, 28, 36, 42, 48 and 60 in., all of which are equipped with touch-screen digital controls, giving operators a range of pressure and speed settings up to 0–1,500 lbs and 90 rpm respectively.

Standard features include a “soft start” ramp-up to protect parts during start up, as well as a corrosion-resistant worktable, chrome pressure plates and a splash/protective enclosure system. There is also an adjustable work table, variable speed drive, pendant style operator control panel, independent tapered bearing support for the drive wheel and three-roller yoke ring arms with single lever adjustment for both inboard and outboard positioning.

Additional options include a water-cooling system, an integrated slurry dispensing system, an abrasive slurry reservoir and a lap plate flatness gauge. If required, Engis can offer fully customised machines to meet customers’ specific requirements.
