Midlands-based high precision machinists Machined Component Systems Plc (MCS) has invested £400,000 in a new, state-of-the-art Miyano ABX-64SYY machine and necessary amendments to its 25,000ft² facility in Redditch.
The investment means MCS will be able to undertake more 'one hit machining', carrying out milling and turning in one procedure - something that will enable the company to compete for new business in new markets, as part of its on-going strategy of diversification.
The company, which employs 34 people, including three apprentices, specialises in parts that others simply cannot produce, it says.
Managing director Warren Gray is quick to point out that, in his opinion, MCS is not just another engineering company: "Our continuous investment in equipment and our people, working with a positive 'can do' philosophy, sets us apart in our ability to work in close collaboration with customers in providing cost-effective, high quality machining solutions. We are now making a concerted effort to push the boundaries by investing in the technology that will ensure MCS deliver cost-effective machining times and an industry leading level of finished machined quality."
The Miyano ABX-64SYY, from Citizen Machinery UK, is a top-of-the-range machine that boasts a 64 mm bar size, 6 inch chuck, twin-spindle, twin-turret machine with driven tools and + 40 mm of Y-axis cross feed and the ability to machine long shafts with a Z-axis travel of 721 mm.
The machine also features a 15 kW main and 7.5 kW secondary spindle, with automatic part transfer at 30 m/min rapid traverse. Two 12-station, all-driven turrets each have 4.5 kW, 6,000 rpm driven tool speed and up to 40 Nm of torque that will accommodate heavy duty milling sequences.
Miyano's own 'Stealth' technology is also incorporated into the Fanuc control, which enables on-site fine tuning of the machine to account for individual working environments or tailoring the machine performance to suit specific applications.
