As part of its ongoing expansion plans, Yamazaki Mazak UK has extended the Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS) at its state-of-the-art Cyber manufacturing plant in Worcester.

The installation of a fifth FH-8800 horizontal machining centre will increase capacity of the line to meet the increasing demand for the range of Mazak machine tools manufactured here in the UK. “The extension of the FMS is the first machine installation of our current expansion plan,” said Richard Austin, general manager-direct production. “The demand for the machines built here in the UK is continuing to show steady growth and the investment we are making now will ensure that we are able to continue to meet that demand in the most cost-effective way possible – that is by using high technology and automation to generate extra capacity.” The FH 8800 provides one of the largest work envelopes for a machine of this type, with x-, y- and z-axis travels of 1,300 mm, 1,100 mm and 1,000 mm, respectively. Spindle options include a 10 000 rpm, 50 hp variant with 390 lb-ft. of torque or a 7,000 rpm, 40 hp option with 867 ft-lbs of torque. For a machine of this size the FH 8800 is also very agile with rapid traverse in all axes of up to 40 m/min and a tool change time of 1.8 seconds, tool to tool.
