Ajax Machine Tools International is set to offer a totally new design of low-cost European built flat-bed CNC lathes, starting at under £15,000 and fitted with Siemens 808D full colour conversational control and drives package.

The Euroturn range is aimed at training schools and general small batch production and, says managing director William Savin: "This range of lathes reflects European build quality with a specification tuned to our target market. It has the credibility of a respected conversational CNC control with electronic handwheel and the ability for program upload and download through RS 232 port. A USB network interface is available for small batch work." The Ajax Euroturn AJEU 200, 250 and 325 have centre heights matching the model number and swing over bed of 402, 502 and 650 mm, respectively. Between centre distances are 750 mm and 1,000 mm on the smallest 200 machine and up to 3,000 mm on the largest AJEU 325. The the heavy duty cast bases have a hardened bed, with widths of 250, 300 and 350 mm, respectively, and each headstock is designed to maximise the torque from the 4 kW, 5.5 kW and 7.5 kW motors, respectively, through a three speed gearbox. Speed ranges are up to 2,800 rpm on the AJEU 200, 2,300 rpm on the AJEU 250 and 1,700 rpm on the largest AJEU 325. Each machine is ready-to-run, with a quick-change tool post and an option of an 8-station turret. The tailstocks have a 58 mm, 68 mm and 95 mm barrels, respectively, with travels of 180, 200 and 220, again respectively. As an illustration to the thought that has gone into the machine design, the fully enclosed interlocked double-door guarding has flood lighting positioned to the front of working area to eliminate any shadow effect. The control is also mounted on a sliding pendant for ergonomic operation. The machines have options of 3- and 4-jaw chucks, fixed and travelling steadies and range of face plates.
