Pressed inserts for light alloy machining offer savings

Taking full advantage of the developments in insert pressing technology now available, WNT has introduced a range of inserts aimed at machining aluminium, titanium and other light alloys, that offers users a distinct cost/edge advantage. “With the advancement in pressing technology we are now able to manufacture high quality inserts at much lower costs,” says Tony Pennington, WNT (UK) Managing Director. Previously inserts requiring a sharp, highly positive, cutting edge have required grinding to achieve the accuracy, repeatability and surface finish requirements on the machined component. “We are now able to press inserts to a standard that they can achieve around 90 per cent of the performance and productivity of a ground insert but at a cost saving that can be as high as 40 per cent.” A typical DCXT 11T304 insert from this new range, which is available for £2.84 (£1.42/edge) compares with the comparable ground insert, DCGT 11T304, at £4.11 (2.05/edge). The saving is over 30 per cent per edge.
