VMC’s spec targets high precision simultaneous 5-axis machining

A simultaneous 5-axis, high precision vertical machining centre from Colchester-Harrison, designated the Storm SV 700-5x, has a machining volume of 700 mm in X, 500 mm in Y and 355 mm in Z with a tilting A-axis high rigidity trunnion with a sweep of -100 deg to +30 deg to an accuracy of + 3 sec. The 360 deg rotational C-axis of the 250 mm diameter table is programmable up to 16.7 rpm with a repeatability for position within + 2 sec. The machine is constructed on high rigidity Meehanite cast base and saddle with heavy duty THK 45 mm width guideways. Oversize guide blocks have been specified by Colchester-Harrison to provide the perfect platform for combined five-sided approach, single cycle machining operations. Full hydraulic locking is employed giving increased rigidity and a two-section worm creates a five times greater contact surface area than usual compound double lead systems. Not only does this system generate higher accuracy and durability in operation, but it also maintains a backlash tolerance between five and eight microns.
