Toyoda builds FH800SX-I HMC with boast-about dimensions

Toyoda's FH 800 SX-i horizontal machining centre boasts a Z-axis stroke of 1,550 mm, 1,009 Nm of torque to the 30 kW BT50 spindle and 54 m/min rapid traverse rates achieved with an acceleration of 4.9 m/sec2. Meanwhile, with a thermal stabilisation package at the end of the spindle to detect and compute relative edge position, any Z-axis deviation is suppressed.

The Toyoda FH 800 SX-i, available through 2D CNC, has XYZ strokes 1,450 by 1,250 by 1,550 mm and a component capacity involving a swing up to 1,500 mm diameter by 1,500 mm high and up to 2.5 tonnes in weight. In tests, the high torque spindle drive proved able to discharge some 1,248 cm3/min of S48C steel using a 160 mm milling cutter run at 400 rpm, 130 mm cut width, 6 mm depth-of-cut and a feedrate of 1,600 mm/min. In a drilling from solid trial on titanium in 6A1-4V condition, using a 63 mm diameter drill, it was able to remove 252 cm3/min of material running at 404 rpm, 81 mm/min penetration rate. The build of the 28 tonne machine is based on a low centre of gravity column design using rigid cylindrical roller slides. This enables very low levels of elastic deformation to be maintained in the machine, especially when the cutting cycle involves varying load extremes on the tooling and the influence of very short, quick movements and sudden changes in acceleration and deceleration. Positioning accuracy is within ±0.003 mm (±0.002 mm can be specified as an option) and repeatability is within ±0.0015 mm (±0.001 mm available as an option). By incorporating dual drive systems to the X and Y-axes and each ballscrew featuring core-cooling, any temperature variation or gradient within the machine bed is followed and its possible influence on accuracy countered. In addition, a high pressure preloading of the spindle bearing at low speeds also suppresses any heat generation as the speed increases. The spindle is also able to rotate at maximum speed without pre-warming cycles. In the event of wear or damage to the BT50 taper a separate taper cartridge unit can be quickly and easily substituted.
