Universal Robots has unveiled the third generation of its lightweight robots, UR5 and UR10 (5 and 10 kg payload respectively). Special features of the revised robot arms are the true absolute encoders, eight newly developed adjustable safety rated functions, twice the number of builtin I/O, and improved possibilities for connecting equipment to the control boxes.
The true absolute encoder is said to enable faster start-up. The absolute position is recognised immediately after switching on, thus eliminating the need for jogging during the initialisation process.
Regarding safety, the revised UR5 and UR10 can now be operated in different modes. For example, when a human enters the robots work cell, the robot can continue to operate in 'reduced' mode, and then resume full speed when he or she leaves again. Or, the robot can run at full speed inside a CNC machine, and then at reduced speed when outside.
