Sumitomo MSX cutters aimed at 5-axis machining

Optimised milling cycles, in particular for 5-axis applications, are able to benefit from MSX multi-function, high shear milling cutters from Sumitomo Electric Hardmetal. The cutters combine vibration-free cutting cycles with durability, especially when used at high feed rates, says the company.

MSX cutters use a special alloy steel body which has a hardened surface, while to ensure a stable and secure cutting condition is maintained, a double clamping arrangement has been developed specifically for the insert. Also by creating a wider gullet in the body of the holder, chip evacuation is maximised to prevent swarf and temperature accumulation, says Sumitomo. In conjunction with the MSX holders, a newly developed concept of WDMT tri-lobed inserts from Sumitomo is said to reduce cutting forces significantly. The inserts are also designed to help prevent temperature build-up and wear when profiling, plunge cutting, ramping, face milling, slotting and helical boring.
