Sumitomo Hard Metal adds micro drills to its range

A range of coated high performance micro drills able to produce precise holes as small as 30 micron diameter have been added to Princes Risborough-based Sumitomo Electric Hardmetal's high productivity MultiDrills series. The micro drills can be applied to a wide range of materials including copper, carbon steels, alloy and die steels as well as stainless steels.

An MDUS variant is available in diameters between 0.03 and 0.19 mm and is coated with Sumitomo's ultra-thin, long life TiAIN wear resistant surface. An MDSS variant, which comes in sizes from 0.2 to 1 mm, has the super lattice ZX TiN/AIN ultra-hard PVD coating on a tough, highly stable carbide substrate. The MDUS drill has a 120º point angle and a very sharp cutting edge with a 30º helix. It is ground to a precise tolerance of 0.003 mm, maintaining concentricity within 0.3 micron and roundness within 0.5 micron TIR. Flute lengths are between 0.3 and 1.8 mm. The ultra-fine coating enables high surface finishes to be attained and prevents swarf becoming welded to the drill point and fluting to form a built up edge. The shank diameter is 3 mm across the range.
