Sumitomo adds chipbreaker for low cutting force light duty finish turning of super alloys

The NSI chipbreaker, designed for light duty finish turning of super-alloy and hardened steel-type materials involving low cutting forces, is now available through Sumitomo Electric Hardmetal.

High orders of chip control offered by the NSI inserts provide good turning stability and predictability required by the medical and high precision machining sector. Typical operations are those where CNC sliding head machines are involved. The NSI insert produced to G-Class precision incorporates a nose radius having a 'minus tolerance' and a high rake angle. Sumitomo has added this chipbreaker format to the positive relief CCGT, DCGT, TCGT and VCGT inserts. These inserts are available with Sumitomo's multi-layer ZX PVD structured coating on both cermet and carbide base material with both types having a bumpy chipbreaker style. CCGT is an 80º, 7º relief diamond-shaped insert, DCGT 55º, 7º relief diamond, TCGT 60º with 0º relief and VCGT a 35º, 7º relief diamond insert. The ZX nano layer coating of TiAIN and AlCrN creates a surface hardness some 40% higher with a 200ºC higher resistance level to oxidation. ZX coated tools are also able to run at 1.5 times higher speed.
