Studer S41 and S22 with A-axis make large pitch thread grinding part of complete machining

Studer's A-axis on the Studer S41 and S22 cylindrical grinding machines enables users to grind recirculating ball screws or worms, etc, instead of either investing in special grinding machines or passing the work on to a subcontractor. The integrated A-axis, which has been available as an option since September 2013, also provides the efficiencies of complete machining in a single clamping.

Axis-parallel thread grinding processes on Studer machines is not new and can account for 75% of all desired thread types, explains the company, but for the remaining 25% a tilting grinding wheel (A-axis), adapted to the thread pitch angle, is necessary. In the case of the Studer S41, it can even be equipped with two A-axes for high productivity applications: one grinding wheel can be used for rough grinding (from solid); the second being used for fine grinding. Internal threads are particularly challenging if the bores are long. It is therefore important that the intelligent StuderThread software is also capable of compensating for angular pitches, which cannot be tilted to the full extent due to the risk of collision between wheel arbor and bore.
