Kitamura has built the machine around a C-frame base to maximise rigidity and vibration damping, using heavy duty cross-roller linear guideways. The 3XD offers X, Y and Z-axis travels of 760, 510 and 510 mm, respectively, while a rapid traverse rate of 48 m/min operates. To support high material removal rates, the machine incorporates a dual-contact BBT40 taper spindle, a 26 kW motor and a maximum spindle speed of 12,000 rpm.
The 3XD is supplied with a 24-tool magazine featuring random memory selection that supports a tool change time of 1.9 seconds. The spindle taper can accommodate tool diameters of up to 150 mm and of tool length 240 mm.
Driving the machine is Kitamura's state-of-the-art Arumatik-JR CNC control unit, offering high speed machining functions that "are beyond the realms of alternative control units".
