Sandvik Coromant CoroTap 100 – KM suits cast iron

Sandvik Coromant has launched a tap for use with cast iron, CoroTap 100 – KM, that features a larger number of flutes to reduce the force on each cutting edge.

A newly developed flute shape helps to produce thin and small chips, making it suitable for solving chip issues in cast iron, as well as in steel materials with hardness between 150 and 190 HB.

A back chamfer has been added to let the tap thread deeper, while a grade featuring improved hardness makes the tool more wear resistant. The D210 grade is a combination of powder steel substrate with high hardness and titanium aluminium nitride featuring a multi-layer coating. Furthermore, thread and chamfer relief is optimised to reduce the contact between the tap and the workpiece material.

When tested against a competitor product, CoroTap 100 – KM demonstrated a secure process and a 70% longer tool life, says Sandvik Coromant.
