Sandvik Coromant launches optimised multi-material drill

The latest addition to the Sandvik Coromant CoroDrill 860 range features -GM geometry that is said to offer high-performance drilling across a range of materials and applications, as well as significantly improved tool life over its predecessor, the R840.

Sandvik Coromant’s CoroDrill 860 with -GM geometry features newly developed grade technology and a novel flute design with a multi-layer PVD coating on the drill tip. The geometry includes a double-margin design for added stability, increased core strength and reinforced corners, all of which contribute to process security and hole quality. The flute is highly polished, which helps improve chip evacuation and reduce heat build-up during the drilling process.

In terms of workpiece materials, CoroDrill 860-GM is suitable for use on steel, stainless steel, cast iron, hardened metals and heat-resistant super alloys. The drill also performs competitively on non-ferrous metals, such as copper and aluminium, reports the company.

James Thorpe, global product manager at Sandvik Coromant, says: “We understand that enhanced tool life and improved productivity are two major requirements. The CoroDrill 860 with -GM geometry is suitable for applications where hole quality is critical within the automotive, general machinery and oil and gas industries.

“We wanted to offer an improved solution for a range of industrial applications, and streamline our product offering,” he continues. “We’ve achieved this with a single, multi-purpose drill that gives superior performance across many materials. As well as improved drilling quality, our customers can also realise reduced tooling inventory and production costs, as well as greater machine flexibility.”
