A range of reamers from WNT (UK) are targeted at companies producing small to medium batch sizes, where cycle time savings are extremely valuable.
The reamers are available as either HSR or HSR 100 designation, with both ranges featuring solid carbide bodies that aids rigidity and stability at elevated cutting speeds. Through and blind hole configurations are possible.
The HSR range is available between 4 mm and 20 diameter in increments of 0.5 mm up to 12 mm diameter and 1 mm between 12 mm and 20 mm diameter.
A greater range of sizes is available from the HSR 100 range, which goes from 3.70 mm diameter to 20.20 mm diameter, but in much finer size increments of 0.01 mm.
All of the reamers feature a DIN 6535-HA plain shank as standard, which is ideal for use with shrink-fit adaptors, PS 2000 or hydraulic expansion chucks. They are also supplied with through coolant facility to aid swarf evacuation and improve hole quality, with users able to specify through or blind hole application at the time of ordering.
The performance of the reamers is enhanced by two specific features, namely a TiAlN coating and an extremely uneven pitch on the multiple cutting edges. The TiAlN coating has a very high hardness level and resistance to oxidisation to help with both hole quality and tool life. The extreme uneven flute design plays an important role in creating holes with improved circularity when compared to conventional flute patterns.
For both HSR and HSR 100 ranges, roundness of 1 – 2 micron can be achieved as opposed to, typically, 10 micron from conventional reamers.
And in terms of cutting performance, the reamers provide much higher productivity as the following example shows. Reaming a 10 mm diameter hole, 45 mm through a component manufactured from 1.2312 (40 CrMnMoS8 6) steel was achieved at 100 m/min and 0.8 mm/rev in a time of 1.18 seconds using the HSR reamer. This compares to 45 m/min and 0.4 mm/rev and a cycle time of 5.75 seconds with a carbide tipped adjustable reamer. Further benefits are also derived from the fact that the HSR range is typically 50 per cent of the cost of a comparable adjustable reamer.
