Multi-functional indexable carbide tooling

Multi-functional, yet high performance indexable carbide cutting tools able to be used for combined turning, facing, drilling from solid and boring using a single toolholder and insert has been developed by LMT’s Boehlerit team in Austria. So radical is the patented design of the Pentatec tool that incorporates ‘optimised chip yield’ in either stationary or rotating applications, that the smallest ‘Trigon’ shaped carbide insert in the tool range is also capable of drilling holes as small as 8 mm diameter from solid, making it the world’s smallest indexable insert drill. The design of the Pentatec tool range, says LMT (UK), enables it to perform the same machining tasks as five different ISO style tools thus contributing to savings of up to 30 per cent on cycle times by eliminating the need to change tools, reducing the number of tool movements and the time taken for re-positioning. In addition, machine setting times, tool inventory and stocking requirements can also be reduced.
