Mollart gundrills exploit benefits of indexable carbide inserts

Gundrills now available from Mollart Engineering exploit the advantages of indexable carbide inserts to produce high accuracy bores between 12 and 100 mm diameter with an up to 40:1 diameter-to-depth ratio

This gundrill range, aimed at single cycle drilling from solid on CNC lathes and machining centres as well as dedicated gundrill machines, provides a competitive alternative to traditional ejector drill tooling. These indexable insert alternatives to conventional drills are said to achieve the same high tolerance, high quality, geometrically straight and round holes but at far higher overall penetration rates. The gundrills maximise the benefits of through-the-tool coolant supply but should through-the-tool coolant not be available, Mollart is able to provide a retrofit spray mist-based system for deep hole applications. Inserts can be changed without removing the tool from the machine. This advantage means that users also have the flexibility to maximise the drilling performance through a choice of carbide and insert coating plus a selection of chipbreaker styles to suit the material and application. Indexable insert drills are available in two basic types for producing holes up to 75 mm diameter. For holes between 75 and 100 mm, tools are supplied application-specific through the engineering team of Mollart. Type 01 tools produce hole sizes between 12 and 43.99 mm diameter. Tools are available in 0.05 mm increments and can be obtained in versions -000 with two carbide guide pads, -010 with extended guide pads, which are also ideal for cross hole drilling, and -020 which has a milled shank and two guide pads. The -020 series of tools is available in a drilling range from 18 mm diameter in standard lengths of 5xD and 10xD. Tools can be supplied up to 4,500 mm long to a tolerance of + 0.01 mm. Type 02 tools are available in diameters from 37 to 74.99 mm with either three guide pads or with an extended guide pad. Type 07 has two guide pads and is available between 25 and 50.99 mm diameter.
