Matsuura Japan Lumex Avance-25 combines additive/milling processes

The Lumex Avance-25 is an additive metal laser sintering/high speed milling hybrid machine tool that will make huge reductions in mould-making production times, claims Matsuura Japan.

The technology combination offered by the Lumex Avance-25 enables the additive metal laser sintering process to grow a component from powder then employ high speed machining to finish-machine the whole or sections of the part to an immaculate surface finish and extremely high accuracy, says Matsuura. The Lumex Avance-25 features a 400 W Yb fibre laser, Matsuura 45,000 rpm spindle and touchscreen NC operation. By changing the laser focus and power, varying densities of material including porous structures can be produced. It can achieve accuracies of ±2.5 µm with full component accuracies of ±25 µm due to growing the part while finish machining in one set-up. Also internal features of the component can be finish machined and then sealed within the part leaving no external access. Such parts could not be manufactured using conventional production methods, emphasises Matsuura, and components can be designed that were not conceivable before. It is possible to rapid prototype an accurate and completely machined part in one set-up in an unattended process.
