Huron MX12 TM 5-axis machine also turns

2 mins read

The Huron MX12 TM multi-functional mill-turning centre is a highly adaptable machine tool capable of cutting in 5 axes and on five sides in one setup, from roughing to finishing, as well as carrying out all turning operations.

It can easily accommodate the clamping of large parts. It has cast iron elements and a special vibration-damping structural design with portal and moving column equipped with re-circulating roller-type linear bearing. Supporting the vertical Z-axis column, the Y-axis uses a slant-bed design with height-staggered linear guideways for improved kinematic leverage. This design minimises the effect of the cutting tool push-off and enhances the absorption of all machining forces. The pallet worktable can accommodate parts up to 1400 mm diameter by 1130 mm high and up to 2500 kg raw material weight. The worktable, which is equipped with the company's TRIM-drive concept (Table with Rotary Integral Motor), provides a maximum continuous revolution of 250 rpm and a clamping torque of 7000 Nm. Mark Devall at UK agent, says: "For engineering companies producing large, complex components in free cutting or difficult to machine materials the Huron MX12 TM provides an exceptional solution. Being fast and extremely accurate, it keeps the extended cycle times normally associated with these types of components to a minimum." For XYZ travels of 1,200, 1,600 and 1,000 mm, the Huron MX12 TM has a compact footprint of 6,124 by 10,240 mm deep when equipped with the twin-pallet changer. With axes accelerations up to 4 m/s² and rapid traverse rates up to 40 m/min the machine offers class-leading dynamics. Fitted on a 45° interface allowing tilting from -45 to +180°, the swivelling spindle head of the Huron MX12 TM in conjunction with the rotary table on the linear axis provides exceptional process freedom, making the machine tool very flexible. The standard 280 Nm high torque 50 kW spindle motor offers cutting speeds up to 10,000 rpm. An 18,000 rpm high speed spindle with HSK 100 taper for HSM and hard metal machining operations can be specified. Spindle clamping is provided by Hirth coupling for rigid, high accuracy turning operations. With the optional automatic pallet changer and high capacity automatic tool changer (ATC) having 48 stations as standard, up to 210 locations as an option, extended machining cycles and around-the-clock operation are fully supported by the MX12 TM. Tool assemblies up to 400 mm long and 180 mm diameter can be loaded in the ATC, which features chip-to-chip times of just 12 sec. Belt-type chip conveyors efficiently remove swarf from the machine's enclosure. The two-station pallet changer is designed by Huron to offer various clamping options including a T-slot table, standard hole patterns and bespoke solutions such as zero-point clamping systems. Additional automation is also supported including robot loading and unloading. Control comes from the advanced NC systems from either Siemens Simumerik 840D with ShopMill conversational programming or Heidenhain's iTNC 530 system.
