Heidenhain TS460 and TT460 probes combine infrared and radio transmission

Designed for use on machining centres, milling, drilling and boring machines, as well as B-axis lathes with automatic tool change, the latest TS460 and TT460 touch-probes are for aligning and measuring workpieces, tool setting and detecting cutter wear and breakage.

Among the features introduced is the ability to feed signals back to the control via an infrared (IR) or radio link. The ability to switch between the two modes of wireless transmission is not available on any other make of touch-probe, says Heidenhain.

It means that the same unit can be swapped between different machine tools, irrespective of whether they are equipped with IR or radio communication, saving the cost of buying extra probes. The TS460 is for workpiece touch-probing, while the table-mounted TT460 with contact plate is for tool length and diameter measurement.
