Flexible and dynamic Handtmann HBZ Trunnion series

The Handtmann HBZ Trunnion horizontal 5-axis machining centre series is aimed at precision aluminium, steel and titanium applications in the automotive, mould and die, toolmaking, energy and aerospace industries. The HBZ TR 80, HBZ TR 120 and HBZ TR 160 – with 800, 1,200 and 1,600 mm diameter tables respectively – join the company's HBZ AeroCell and HBZ CompactCell machines already on the market and will be unvelied at AMB Stuttgart in September.

The HBZ Trunnion series, incorporating Handtmann's high performance flexible PowerCube concept, delivers high power and torque in a small footprint, compact, extremely rigid machine to ensure workpiece quality. They are intended for three-point floor mounting and do not require special foundations facilitating relocation. The rotary swivel table and up to 125 kW spindle power enables productive 5-axis machining of steel and titanium, while up to 390 Nm of torque enables aluminium to be processed at up to 30,000 rpm. Horizontal machining provides optimised processing in mill-turn applications when using high performance spindles, argues Handtmann, and chips and coolant drop directly down from the workpiece rather than collecting in deep pockets. Horizontal machining also reduces workpiece heating and thus provides better thermal stability. Loading is possible both from above and from the front with workpieces being clamped horizontally on the rotary swivel table. Once loaded, the table is swivelled into the vertical position. The swivel range is defined between +30°/-120°, the interference contour is therefore 850, 1,250 or 1,650 mm diameter depending on the table diameter. The HBZ Trunnion series is designed for extremely dynamic machining. They feature a double drive system in the X-axis with upper and lower guideways, workpiece-independent linear axes, direct measuring systems and the backlash and wear free torque drive in A and C axes. Machine stiffness and the thermo-symmetric designed base frame support workpiece accuracy. Standard accelerations of 6 m/s2 and standard travel speed of 45 m/min can be increased with the optional dynamic package to 10 m/s2 and 60 m/min. Chips are immediately transported out of the machine room via scraper and/or screw type chip conveyors. Handtmann also offers various ways to automate a single machine while a universal interface for palette changer and a rack magazine for palettes allow several machines to be combined. The standard chain type tool magazine is equipped with 40 slots. Optionally, 60 slots are available. Furthermore, a rack type tool magazine with several hundred slots can be installed. A double gripper enables a 3 sec chip-to-chip toolchange. The tool magazine can be loaded during production to further minimise downtime.
