As Engis points out, maintenance of lap plate flatness throughout the whole of the lapping process is essential for the manufacture of consistent high quality components, as generally parts lap to a mirror image of the lapping plate with respect to flatness. For example, if the lap plate is excessively concave, the lapped parts will be convex, and vice-versa. It is, therefore, important to check the flatness of the plate periodically and make any necessary adjustments
