Fanuc, a global leader in factory automation, has named Tom Mathias as president of its European Factory Automation (FA) business. Most recently, Mr Mathias was executive vice president, responsible for the European service business.

An American citizen, and fluent in both Japanese and German, Mr Mathias spent a year in Japan at the Fanuc Product Development Laboratories in 1998 before returning to the United States, where he worked in various sales and marketing positions in Fanuc's US factory automation business. In 2006, he came to Europe as managing director of Fanuc UK Service, and shortly thereafter, was appointed to lead Fanuc's European service business, a position he held until the merger of the Fanuc CNC and Fanuc Service companies this year. Fanuc FA Europe provides sales, service and support for Fanuc CNC systems to machine tool builders, dealers and users. The headquarters is located in Echternach/Luxembourg and the company has 12 subsidiaries around Europe. "I want to be a Swiss company in Switzerland, a Turkish company in Turkey, and a Polish company in Poland," explained Mr Mathias. "There is no other factory automation company that can match the global reach, local service, and world-class technology that Fanuc can offer our customers, and I'm looking forward to making sure that our customers succeed with Fanuc – in Europe, and globally." Headquartered at the foot of Mt. Fuji, Japan, Fanuc is said to be the most diversified manufacturer of FA (Factory Automation), robots and robomachines in the world. Since its inception in 1956, Fanuc has contributed to the automation of machine tools as a pioneer in the development of computer numerical control equipment.
