Thompson friction welder boosts US reamer manufacturer Yankee's productivity

The Yankee Corporation, a premier North American manufacturer of reamers, has seen a big improvement in productivity, following the installation of a refurbished Thompson friction welding machine for producing its extensive range of tools, which are typically used for aerospace and automotive applications.

The Thompson direct drive machine is equipped with a number of features, including a rotating flash removal tool and intuitive software system for full control over the weld cycle. Yankee, based in Fairfax, Vermont, opted for the reconditioned model because it needed a speedy replacement for its ageing welding equipment. "Our productivity has improved at least 25% at a time when our business is very buoyant and we're making plans to expand our distributor network," says plant manager Tony Olson. "All our operators are impressed with the machine, particularly the computer interface, which is very easy to use. In more than 20 years in the manufacturing industry, I've never met a more professional and helpful company than Thompson."
