Friction welding specialist Thompson will be bidding to win new business in Asia, when it exhibits at CIMT, China's biggest machine tool show.

The UK-based manufacturer will showcase its range of new generation PR piston rod machines, which feature a number of innovations for boosting accuracy and productivity, at the Beijing-held event from April 22-27. Produced at Thompson's headquarters in Halesowen, West Midlands, the models are specially designed to join a range of chromed piston rods and cylinders used in construction machines. They are not only equipped with an enhanced hydraulic control system, but also an improved heavy duty flash removal device, which offers better chip control thanks to a head mounted flash guard. "At the last CIMT show, Thompson not only won a raft of orders from customers in China, but also from manufacturers in other parts of the Far East, as well as from Australia," commented Asia sales manager Rob Stevens. Thompson will also be promoting its range of linear friction welding machines for joining a wide variety of components for the aerospace, medical, power generation and high performance engineering industries. The E20 can weld parts up to 3,000 mm sq, in a range of materials, and has an open architecture, meaning it is easy to load/unload components, install and extract tooling and add auxiliary monitoring equipment. Following its attendance at CIMT, Thompson will celebrate the 50th anniversary of its first-ever friction weld, with a special event in May.
