Tacchella offers 250 m/sec cylindrical grinding speed

Working together with three other Italian technology companies, Tacchella has developed an external cylindrical grinder capable of supporting 250 m/sec wheel speeds.

Key to the machine's high speed performance, which resulted from the so-called HPGS project (High Performance Grinding Solution), is the special CBN wheel, 500 mm in diameter, designed with an extra-light and shock-proof body made totally from carbon fibre. The three other companies involved in the project were: Molemab SpA, a designer and manufacturer of wheels and abrasive tools; Capellini Srl, a builder of electric spindles; Marposs SpA, a specialist in gauging systems, detectors and balancing devices. The special sensing devices - monitoring spindle operation, detecting wheel/workpiece contact or wheel/dressing disc contact; the wheel balancing device and the 'in-process' gauging equipment, have all been conceived and designed to operate at elevated output rates yet still guarantee maximum system reliability and safety. The wheelhead spindle has been purpose-designed with a motor integrated on extra-precise ceramic bearings. The four companies funded the project themselves and the resulting machine is, in fact, a further development of the Pulsar Linear Drive range launched at EMO, Milan at the beginning of this month. Pulsar Linear Drive is a range of high production grinders, with dedicated models for high-speed CBN wheels (S line). The S line supports CBN technology via 500 mm diameter wheels and offers peripheral speeds up to 120 m/sc; the new development more than doubles that performance.
