OGP UK of Foston, Derbyshire, has promoted Jon Banner to technical manager aerospace operations, in response to growing demands in the sector that are focused on improved lead time, production data collection, traceability and productivity, particularly in the inspection and measurement of key components.
He will be driving the demonstration of the advantages gained through single cycle, multi-feature 3D measurement of components from one datum, taking in elements such as vision, tactile and surface measurement.
Explained Andrew Fulton, managing director: "Recent developments in 3D measuring technology by OGP that give the ability to check multiple feature dimensions, specifications and special requirements of a component at a single setting have created significant advantages to boost productivity on inspection procedures. The benefits follow the latest trends adopted by the machine tool industry to maximise productivity, reduce lead time and costs-per-part through automated 'single-hit' multi-operational sequences on CNC lathes and machining centres."
Normal production processes often result in delays through inspection, especially on complex parts involving multiple features requiring different measuring equipment such as co-ordinate measuring machines, height, gauges, profile projectors, surface finish checking and the use of small tools such as vernier calipers, micrometers and depth gauges, etc. This leads to delays due to work queues, inaccuracies from relocation and personal interpretation of results plus any on-cost demands to satisfy calibration requirements.
To overcome these problems, OGP is now providing fully programmable combined measurement cycles involving different process sequences on a single measuring machine. The latest OGP developments incorporate vision, touch probe, laser scanning and fully programmable lighting using different mediums, as well as the capability to provide six-face approach to a component through 5-axis positioning. In addition, automatic data collection is performed against measurements captured during the process.
In order to support this technology, the promotion of Jon Banner, who is recognised as a well-versed engineer in measuring technology, as well as having extensive experience in the aerospace sector, will provide an individual hands-on service to customers.
He is a time-served aerospace engineer with more than 20 years' experience in the industry, which includes management positions at OGP UK, and has the ability to communicate across all levels involved with quality control and inspection within a customer.
