New training courses aim to get manufacturers measuring properly

With the official opening of its new southern technical centre in Swindon last month, Hexagon Metrology simultaneously announced its intention to help drive up the measurement skills of those in UK manufacturing.

The measurement specialist is to deliver UKAS-accredited NPL-developed training materials, along with a network of other accredited deliverers. NPL developed the materials, supported by DTI funding, following a survey which revealed the need. There will be four levels of training, from measurement taker (user of measurement equipment – level 1) up to measurement specialist. Level 1 is available now, while a successful pilot was carried out at Rolls-Royce in April. A level 1 course will take about four days to complete and can be undertaken on- or off-site and is priced at £624 – a price currently subsidised by the DTI. The second course, level 2, is to be piloted in October and is expected to take up to eight days. Level 3 will take 10 days, while level 4 will involve peer-reviewed papers, in the manner of a thesis. The training system is to be driven by a steering committee which will include representatives from industry users. The first meeting takes place on November 15. Rolls-Royce is an early adopter and is hoped that as larger OEMs take up the system, so it will be rolled by these firms to the supplier base. Interested companies should contact NPL Training direct (see weblink) which will accept the order; companies can then choose the deliverer At the moment, Hexagon Metrology is one of two but another five will be up and running after this month with a further five more following.
