Miyano fast tracks turn-mill installations for two subcontractors

Within eight weeks of launch of the latest twin-spindle, twin-turret Miyano BNJ-42SY3 turn-mill centre, two machines were installed at precision parts specialist Technoturn of St Leonards-on-Sea and Unicut Precision of Welwyn Garden City.

John Stretton, general manager of Miyano Machinery UK, said: "Both these customers, who are already dedicated Miyano users and well-versed in the production capability, had won totally new long term contracts requiring the flexibility in a machine to optimise tooling and hence cycle times. The new Series 3 BNJ with its combination of main 12 station and six station back-working, all-driven turrets and the ability to significantly overlap axis movements with faster data processing in the control became available at exactly the right time." David Mcilwain, managing director of Technoturn confirmed the importance of winning the £100,000 contract for aluminium connectors but with the experience of 10 Miyano machines within the Technoturn Group, seven of which are installed at St Leonards, he maintains it was a straightforward decision to purchase the newly launched machine. However, the order was based on Miyano guaranteeing delivery, installation and commissioning within a week and that the first delivery of parts would be made to the customer two days later. Adding to the short delivery at Technoturn, Miyano Machinery also had to satisfy Unicut Precision's directors for installation of the first BNJ Series 3 machine in the UK which was shipped direct from the Citizen-Miyano Open House. Like Technoturn, Unicut had previous generations of BNJs and had won a long term contract on the capability to produce 5,000 parts a week but needed extra capacity and faced a tight schedule to achieve batch one delivery. Both Technoturn and Unicut contracts involved families of components with a multitude of combined operations that benefit from the overlapping capability of the BNJ's tool movements. The Technoturn connectors require combinations of turning, drilling, broaching, knurling, slotting, the milling of flats and keyways, while the Unicut hydraulic components involve turning and boring, plus a multitude of threading, cross-drilling, milling and grooving cycles.
