Friction welding specialist Thompson has boosted its sub-contracting business with the addition of a single-ended model 150 machine following a three-fold increase in business.

The new machine, built by Thompson, features a number of new, high-tech features, such as CNC flash removal, closed-loop control of welding pressures and unique machine base construction. These features are intended to deliver improved levels of weld accuracy and finishing for a wider range of components. With this latest addition, the Halesowen facility now boasts a total of 12 machines varying in capacity from 500 kg to 150 ton forging capacity. The sub-contract service can weld parts from 4 to 125 mm in solid material. “This latest expansion is part of an on-going investment policy which now totals £5 million in the last 10 years,” says Alan Shilton, Thompson’s managing director. “It ensures the business continues to move forward in an increasingly competitive marketplace and means the facility retains its position as the largest of its kind in the UK.” Thompson employs around 100 staff and has an annual turnover in excess of £16 million
