Dormer’s colour-coded Shark taps

1 min read

Dormer Tools will show its Shark Line taps at MACH 2014 and they're expected to live up to their name when it comes to biting into material.

The taps are extremely tough because they are made out of HSS-E-PM substrate but the big news is that they are colour-coded to show the type of metal that the tap should be used on. Yellow Shark is for threading low alloy steels, Red Shark is for alloy steels, Blue Shark is for stainless steels, White Shark is for iron and Green Shark is for aluminium, brass and copper. Compared to conventional HSS taps, the Shark line has "superior grindability", says Dormer. The taps also have unique rake and relief angles for the materials they're going to be used on, something which the company says is "essential for producing the optimum thread". Yellow Shark has a 5 micron thick layer of electroplated chrome, which the company says will prevent edge build-up in materials that are prone to sticking to the cutting edges. The flute geometry is also designed to prevent swarf nesting. Red Shark is available in either a bright finish or with TiAlN-Top coating. The spiral flute version has a back taper design to diminish chipping on the last few threads of the tap and reduces the torque needed to reverse the tool. Blue Shark taps are available with a steam temper or Super-B, a hard lube coating that prevents chips adhering to the flutes. White Shark is available with a steam temper or TiAlN coating options, and has a straight flute design that enables production of both through and blind holes. Finally, Green Shark has a bright or TiAlN-Top finish to provide exceptional cutting service life in aluminium and its alloys, brass and copper, says the company. The taps will be on show in Hall 5 on stand 5248.
