Coffee challenge gets express treatment from KMF

In partnership with subcontractor KMF Precision Sheet Metal, Coffee Nation has further developed its range of coffee machines to meet the challenge of incorporating a card payment system to take advantage of chip and pin technology.

Working with the engineering and design teams at KMF, Coffee Nation embarked on an 18 month project to develop its Express payment system. A system which has opened up new markets for Coffee Nation in sectors such as education, healthcare, business and industry. "The project was basically a blank canvas and we were able to investigate many options to integrate new components to create this new vend technology, before eventually developing the existing technology to meet the new demand," explains Graham Leese, KMF's engineering manager. "The existing touchscreen that is a familiar sight on Coffee Nation Machines was able to have the chip and pin technology integrated within it." However, the use of the existing Touchscreen provided a set of challenges for the team at KMF, namely the additional components required had to fit within the existing unit. Mr Leese and his team, along with input from its customer, created what is now becoming one of Coffee Nation's most popular coffee bars: The Express-Pod – a slimline version of the Express. "The work we are doing with Coffee Nation is a prime example of how KMF can and is collaborating with its customers by not only controlling the entire manufacturing process, but by also being integral in the development of their products. The pace of change in consumer demands means that more and more products are being designed, or simply redesigned, to either meet consumer demand or deliver a competitive edge over a competitor's product. The team and skills that we are able to deploy at KMF is playing a major role in maintaining and growing the business we have in the self-service kiosk and point of sale environment," concludes Mr Leese.
