Call for participation in additive manufacturing standards development programme

Lloyd’s Register (LR) Energy and TWI have launched a joint industry project (JIP) that will bring together research and development efforts along with real-world additive manufacturing practices.

A launch event is being held on 29 September at LR Energy’s Birmingham offices. Interested parties are invited to RSVP by Friday 19 September 2015 via email: jip@twi.co.uk.

They say: "Laser powder additive manufacturing has developed rapidly in the last ten years and has demonstrated significant potential for the energy and offshore sectors. Benefits can be realised through improved design freedom, weight reduction and lower tooling costs, complemented by reductions in carbon footprint and waste during manufacture."

This project will create new industry product certification guidelines, paving the way for more widespread adoption of the additive manufacturing technology and assisting industry in how best to tap its potential.

They are now seeking sponsor companies that will each contribute a detailed component design that will be taken from concept through to completion in the additive manufacturing process. Selective Laser Melting and Laser Metal Deposition are the processes that will be applied in the JIP, leading to certification of sponsor components. It is envisaged at the end of the project, each sponsor will have a third-party (LR) conditionally certified part that meets industrial requirements for quality, safety and consistency and ready for market introduction.

"With the adoption of proposed additive manufacturing industry standards likely to be several years away, this JIP will have a significant impact on these burgeoning sectors and bring a much-needed focus on safety and certification," they add.
