Specialist machining company Bulwell Precision Engineers has installed a Matsuura 5-axis MAM72-35V milling machine, G-TECH 30i Controller and specialised CNC measuring equipment, as the foundation for a new manufacturing cell geared towards complex valve block and other complex prismatic assemblies.

Based in Pinxton, Nottinghamshire, Bulwell is part of the Nasmyth Group and is already SC21-accredited to Bronze level. Through sponsorship by a major customer – itself a joint venture between leading names in the industry – Bulwell is working towards Silver. The new machinery was purchased to support the manufacture of a new contract to manufacture actuation equipment complex valve blocks. While the company Bulwell is already experienced at precision valve block manufacture, the new components required extremely close-tolerance bores, the hard anodising of those bores and completely blemish-free surfaces. "In conjunction with the purchase of the new equipment, we have developed lean-based practices and processes, reflecting how our role is changing within the supply chain, from generic CEM to specialist partner," explains Simon Beech, divisional managing director. Peter Smith, Group CEO, concludes: "The new equipment and revised processes have greatly boosted our capabilities and broadened the services we can offer to existing and future customers. They are also prime examples of continued investment within Bulwell and the larger Nasmyth Group – both of which have experienced healthy growth during the recent 'hard years' within the industry."
