Heavy engineering case file: extra-large XYZ lathe for scientific instrument supplier

Hastings-based Hivac Engineering is a specialist in the manufacture of ultra-high vacuum chambers and equipment used in surface science, semi-conductor and synchrotron particle acceleration.

The chambers are welded assemblies featuring a number of prismatic and turned parts. With regard to the latter, the company has recently extended its capabilities by acquiring an XL 1100 extra-large bed lathe from XYZ Machine Tools (01823 674200).

According to Paul Lennard, managing director at Hivac, the lathe had to be robust, easy to use and have a relatively compact footprint. “The XYZ XL 1100 met all those criteria, as it is an 8,000 kg machine with a solid cast construction,” he says. “Moreover, with the bed length that we specified, the footprint is only 3,930 by 2,300 by 2,200 mm, but we can swing 1,100 mm over the bed."
