Tornos hails its Swiss Nano ‘the watchmaking machine of the future

Tornos, responsible for the proven Deco 7 and 10, believes its Swiss Nano 'watchmaking machine of the future' could prove of interest to the UK electronics industry, especially for the production of small diameter connectors. The 4 mm capacity 1,800 by 650 by 1,600 mm (LWH) automatic turning machine has 180° front access and can be placed against a wall. The machining area is protected by a 'bubble' and is accessible from all sides. The design has an integrated a tablet in addition to a conventional control.

The Swiss Nano incorporates an X1/Y1 tooling platten with seven turning tools with maximum shank dimensions of 8 by 8 mm. It also has the capacity for three end-mounted tools with a diameter up to 16 mm as well as another two end-mounted tools for counter-operations. Options for gear hobbing and transverse drilling, HF spindles and polygon tools are available to meet the end-user's specific needs. The 1 kW induction motorised spindle and counter spindle are both capable of a maximum speed of 16,000 rpm. Furthermore the Swiss Nano offers fixed, rotating and guide-bushless operation to ensure it can produce all the user's parts in the 4 mm diameter range. Tornos also offers peripherals such as a carousel collection system. The kinematic structure was designed to provide exemplary balance and thermal management. The axes and cast iron members are aligned symmetrically to the guide bush and thermal requirements are managed by 'mini-loops' that prevent heat propagation. The structure is anchored on three damped points for rigidity and vibration stability. The Swiss Nano includes a precision tool setting system using a sensor and feeler probe as a user-friendly system to position the tools to within 3 to 8 µ, according to the bar diameter. All the basic production data (workpieces, products, machine, bar changeover, fleet monitoring) are reported on the unit's graphic tablet interface, allowing the operator access to all the data for a specific machine or for a whole fleet of machines at a glance. The latest addition to the Tornos stable will be available for UK installation in the last quarter of 2013.
