Tornos aims ‘simple’ 7-axis Swiss ST26 at medical and automotive markets

Tornos is producing a CE version for Europe of the Swiss ST26 which was originally developed as a simple machine for the Asian and American markets.
Equipped with seven axes, Tornos says the European version of the Swiss ST26 will be a direct competitor to machines equipped with five or six axes and will be available in the same price range. It completes the Tornos mid-range offering, sitting between the EvoDeco and the Gamma.
The 2,300 by 1,300 by 1,700 mm (length x width x height) footprint ST26 can handle workpieces up to 25.4 mm diameter and 220 mm long. It weighs 3,300 kg and has 9.5 kW spindle and counter spindle power.
The combination of two features in particular supports the production of relatively complex parts. The first is the machine's kinematics which provides two independent plattens, the rear one of which can work on the bar and perform back operations, providing a balanced set-up between the two sides of the workpiece being machined and enabling several machining operations to be executed concurrently.
The other significant feature is the two powerful and highly responsive identical operation and back operation spindles. Three tools can be engaged in the material simultaneously. Back operations are performed with platten 1, allowing work to continue on the guide bush.
The Moutier developed and produced synchronous type spindle which delivers 9.5 kW also provides acceleration and deceleration from 0 to 10,000 rpm in 0.9 sec. The spindles are equipped with an integrated cooling system and contribute to the machine's thermal stability and precision.
The ST26 has been given a Deco-type tool system and can accommodate up to 36 tools, including 16 rotating tools. Numerous devices are available for specific operations, such as polygon operations, thread-whirling processes and milling.
The Swiss ST 26 is offered as standard in three versions, described as 'the starter', 'the advanced' and 'Medtech'. These three packages include a variety of equipment suited to the type of workpieces to be produced. Depending on the requirements, the company can also supply additional equipment such as chip conveyor, high pressure pump or oil mist extractor.
