Overhead gantry supported spindle gives DMU 80 eVo 5-axis VMC exceptional workpiece accessibility

With the spindle head supported by an overhead gantry, DMG's DMU 80 eVo vertical machining centre is said to have exceptional accessibility to the working area, even when an automated workpiece handling system is used. The design also provides an 800 by 650 by 550 mm working volume in what DMG further says is a compact footprint.

The -5/+110° swivelling rotary table has an 800 by 700 mm work surface that allows undercuts of up to 20°. Rapid traverse speed is 60 rpm for the B- and C-axes for a load of 600 kg. DMG believes the VMC is ideal for highly productive 5-sided machining and simultaneous 5-axis profiling of relatively heavy, complex components, such as in the mould making and aerospace sectors. A version of the DMU 80 eVo is planned that includes an automatic pallet changer, with an APC time of 10 sec, and a high revolution torque table to integrate milling and turning into the machining cycles. To increase productivity further, a dynamics package with linear instead of ballscrew drives for the X- and Y-axes can be specified, bringing rapid traverse speed up from 50 to 80 m/min. Tool exchange from the 30-station (optionally up to 120-station) magazine using a double gripper gives chip-to-chip times of less than 5 sec. Instead of the standard 19 kW/14,000 rpm spindle, 18,000 or 24,000 rpm can be specified. All spindles can be supplied with SK40 (BT40) or HSK A63 interfaces. Control is by the DMG ERGOline, including a 19 inch screen and 3D software. Programming and process performance is supported by either the Siemens 840D solutionline with ShopMill or Heidenhain iTNC530.
