High-performance burnishing tools available from Floyd Automatic

Hommel + Keller has released its newly developed range of Zeus diamond burnishing tools. Featuring ultra-fine surfaces, the tools can create surfaces with roughness depths of less than Rz 1 µm on almost any geometry and material. UK availability is via Floyd Automatic Tooling.

In terms of the process, the high-precision, polished diamond tip at the head of the tool, which features adjustable contact pressure, glides over the component and uses cold deformation to change the roughness of the surface. As a result, the surface of the workpiece is burnished and strengthened (without making chips), which also improves its dynamic load capacity and contact ratio.

There are said to be many benefits to the procedure. For instance, workpieces can withstand more extreme stresses and offer increased durability. In addition, the burnished components help to reduce wear and tear on machine elements, and reduce operating temperatures and operational noises.

Zeus diamond burnishing tools are suitable for any batch size – small or large – as well as for the manufacture of prototypes. The tools can also be used on all standard lathes (conventional, fixed head, automatic and Swiss-type), with their compact design ensuring suitability for use in machines where space is restricted.
