Diamond burnishing tools deliver surface roughness below Rz 1 micron for turned parts

Quick, efficient and inexpensive burnishing to surface roughness below Rz 1 micron of nearly all materials and geometries is now made possible with the new diamond burnishing tools from Hommel+Keller Präzisionswerkzeuge GmbH (Floyd Automatic Tooling).

They can machine cylindrical, conical, convex or concave surfaces – even with small geometries. Horizontal applications are no problem either. Through the use of diamond tips, almost all materials – even hardened steels and high-strength materials such as titanium and super-alloys – can be burnished.

Hommel+Keller Präzisionswerkzeuge GmbH offers two different. These are both available as sets, each one with a basic 10 by 10 mm or 16 by 16 mm shank, as well as shank adapters at 12 by12 mm and 16 by 16, and/or 20 by 20 mm and 25 by 25 mm.

The tool in set 510 can be adjusted as much as ± 10° by means of the integrated adjustment facility in the shank. It is perfectly suited to burnishing shafts with cylindrical surfaces and is also suitable to some extent for cones and radii.

Set 520 offers exactly the right tool for anyone wanting to burnish flat surfaces, conical, convex or concave geometries, as well as up to the shoulder. The head can be adjusted variably in a swivel range of ± 90° and can thus be used universally. The diamond burnishing tips are available with radii of 0.4 to 1 mm.

“Cutting speed and feed rate are heavily interdependent when our diamond burnishing tools are used, and must be adapted to the application in question. Equally important is the use of coolant to guarantee the necessary lubrication. Anyone who complies with these recommendations can achieve excellent surface qualities – quickly, easily and inexpensively,” says Adrian Sunderer, product manager at Hommel+Keller Präzisionswerkzeuge GmbH.
