Dormer Tools introduces high performance forming taps

Dormer Tools has introduced forming taps capable of high performance thread production in a wide range of materials, including steels, stainless, non-ferrous metals and aluminium.

Threading with fluteless taps – also known as cold forming or roll tapping – remains a relatively under-used technique, says Dormer Tools, but a key advantage over traditional methods of threading is that it is a chip-free operation. The result is a stronger thread capable of increased load bearing capabilities. Consequently, the company suggests that their forming taps are operated at higher speeds than conventional thread cutting taps to reap the productivity benefits. The taps' highly stable fluteless design means that there is less risk of breakage, as well as increased accuracy of the finished thread with lower surface roughness. A further advantage is that the same tap can be used for threading both through and blind holes. Manufactured from premium grade High Speed Cobalt (HSS-E), the Dormer range includes bright finish and Titanium Nitride (TiN) coated versions. An oil groove option is also available.
