Multi-metal cutting Hysol SL 37 XBB and Hysol SL 45 XBB for aerospace duties from Castrol

Castrol has expanded its range of high performance XBB metalworking fluids with the launch of Hysol SL 37 XBB and Hysol SL 45 XBB, broadening the range of application of the XBB offer.

Castrol XBB cutting fluids can reduce biocide additive top-ups by up to 90%, giving longer life, reducing operating costs, without sacrificing performance, says Castrol. Castrol XBB technology redefines the core properties of cutting fluids as they’re resistant to acid attack from bacteria and proven to maintain pH at a constant level.

“Cutting fluids with Castrol XBB technology are firm favourites for machining operations worldwide, where they help our customers meet stringent HSE legislation and reduce operating costs by eliminating the need for frequent and expensive additive top-ups,” says Dr Rudolf Janner, global product manager at Castrol. “Hysol SL 37 XBB now brings the same benefits to demanding multi-metal machining operations, so plant managers no longer have to choose between quality, safety and productivity.”

In similar vein, he says that Hysol SL 45 XBB brings XBB benefits to demanding aerospace machining applications and again take away the plant manager’s compromise.

Castrol Hysol SL 37 XBB is a multi-metal cutting fluid for machining alloys of aluminium, ferrous, and titanium. High precision performance without compromising productivity means Hysol SL 37 XBB is an excellent all-rounder for a wide range of operations, including drilling, reaming, milling and turning.

Suitable for use in both soft and hard water, Hysol SL 37 XBB reduces foaming, too, keeping machines clean and significantly extending both system and tool life. Importantly, a 20% emulsion of Hysol SL 37 XBB has also been demonstrated to be a non-irritant to the skin, even after repeated contact.

One of the main drawbacks of traditional technology is that, over time, the fluid can suffer from bacterial growth and contamination. This leads to pH depletion, unpleasant odours, unstable emulsion and poor performance.

Castrol Hysol SL 45 XBB gives outstanding machining performance across a wide range of aerospace alloy-cutting processes and is approved by aerospace OEMs such as like Airbus, Bombardier and Safran.

Its excellent lubrication results in longer tool life and higher surface finish, while excellent wetting properties help keep machines and parts free from swarf build-up. As with the first new coolant, a 20% emulsion of Hysol SL 45 XBB has also been demonstrated to be a non-irritant to the skin, even after repeated contact.

Customers trialling Castrol Hysol SL 45 XBB and Castrol Hysol SL 37 XBB report a range of benefits, including: cost savings from reduced biocide and fungicide additive top-ups and visibly reduced foaming.
