Tornos to introduce SwissNano 7 at MACH

Tornos will be introducing the SwissNano 7 and MultiSwiss 8x26 on Stand 538 in Hall 18 at MACH 2020 (Birmingham NEC, 20-24 April). Previously only available in a 4 mm diameter variant, the 7 mm capacity SwissNano 7 retains the advantages of the 4 mm version, such as the kinematics and the thermal stability, when machining small turned parts.

The original machining capacity of 4 mm diameter by 28 mm length has been boosted to 7 mm diameter by 50 mm length, while spindle power has more than doubled to 2.5 kW so the machine can process bars made from hard materials. In addition, the machining area has been enhanced, and the available tooling expanded and optimised to enable numerous operations. The small footprint and machine design means SwissNano 7 occupies the same space as a cam-type machine and can therefore increase output per square metre compared with other CNC machines.

Notably, the six-axis kinematics offer numerical adjustment of all tool positions in the X, Y and Z directions. At the heart of the concept is the back spindle mounted on three linear axes, which makes the machine user friendly. The main platen includes three positions for the rotating tools; it can hold transverse drills, a polygon tool or a gear-hobbing tool. This versatility opens up the possibility of machining operations not previously possible using this range.

This machine is suitable for the medical sector when complemented with the addition of a thread-whirling unit, which enables the production of maxillofacial screws, for example. In addition, the thread-whirling unit can prove to be a good partner when it comes to the production of screws for dental implants or straight implants. The machine can also be equipped with high-frequency spindles for back-machining operations, aiding the generation of hexalobular (Torx) shapes.

Connector machining is another application for the SwissNano 7. The machine can be equipped with a slotting unit for back machining that enables split connectors to be machined from both sides. Moreover, a polygon cutter can be installed for both main and back-machining operations.

The SwissNano 7 also enables processes such as gear cutting to be performed during main and back-machining operations. As well as the two main tool systems, the machine is equipped with tool holders under the counter-spindle. This configuration enables front drilling operations to be performed, or it can even support the workpiece during the machining process.

Going beyond machines at MACH 2020, Tornos will be offering production workflow solutions, including its Industry 4.0 enabling TISIS software. TISIS allows programming and communication directly with the machine. The user is guided intuitively to ensure the optimal use of all tools and, on Tornos’ stand at MACH, expert engineers and R&D team members will demonstrate the range of possibilities offered.
