XYZ unveils UMC-5X Challenger 5-axis machining centre

XYZ Machine Tools has introduced its first simultaneous 5-axis machining centre in the UK. While the XYZ UMC-5X Challenger is new to XYZ, it is an established design with more than 200 machines installed across Europe.

Weighing over 9 tonnes, the XYZ UMC-5X is a compact, gantry-style model. Performance is enhanced with a choice of spindles, ranging from 12,000/15,000 rpm in-line direct drive variants through to 18,000/24,000 rpm core-cooled motorised units.

Axis travels are 600 by 600 by 500 mm in X, Y and Z, while the C-axis table is 600 mm in diameter and can take components weighing up to 600 kg, yet still offers rotational speeds of up to 90 rpm. This is combined with feed rates of 36 m/min and acceleration of 7 m/sec. The A-axis, which has a tilt range of ±120° (with full rotation in under 2.5 seconds) has a feed rate of 16.6 rpm.

The machine also benefits from tool-tip positioning control, spindle vibration supervision, metal removal rate optimisation and axial accuracy control.
