Walter introduces WIS10 and WWS20 ceramic grades for high temperature alloys

Walter GB has announced ceramic indexable inserts specifically for the machining of high temperature alloys – and, importantly, also for finish machining on materials such as Inconel, Waspaloy and Stellite at speeds 5-10 times greater than carbide inserts.

Two Walter grades have been launched to cover a wide range of applications: silicon nitride-based WIS10 (sialon ceramic) and WWS20 with Whisker silicon carbides (Whisker ceramic). WIS10 is suitable for all high temperature alloys and offers excellent wear resistance. WWS20 has a higher level of toughness, and is aimed at nickel-based alloys and difficult conditions – for example, forged parts with variable cutting depths and for the hard machining of steels. The WWS20 grade obtains its high level of toughness from Whisker fibres that prevent the formation of cracks. The inserts are supplied in CN, DN, RC, RP and RN formats with different cutting edge designs for turning and milling. For turning, Walter GB has also added toolholders with a carbide shoe and clamping system for cutting speeds up to 350 rpm. For milling, cutting speeds of up to 1,000 rpm are common.
