Uniform grains give 3M Cubitron II grinding wheels micro-milling performance

Winterthur Technology Group UK (WTG) has launched the 3M Cubitron II gear grinding wheel. The ceramic grains from which the wheels are composed all have identical precise, geometrically defined cutting edges. This uniform construction means they are capable of micro-milling performance.

WTG UK says that in trials the 3M Cubitron II wheel did not cause burning even under severe grinding conditions. It was also possible to reduce grinding cycles by half in some applications. The wheel also consumes less energy and diverts heat from the workpiece. Other benefits cited for the grinding wheel are that it is able to grind and finish a wide range of gear materials from soft to hardened steel. High material removal rates eliminate the need for hobbing gears prior to hardening and grinding. Grinding chips are typically longer enabling easier, more efficient coolant filtration.
