Tyrolit Skytec PCD-Basic+ diamond wheels satisfy cost and quality demands

Tyrolit Skytec PCD-Basic+ grinding wheels are for the manufacture of PCD (polycrystalline diamond) and CBN (cubic boron nitride) indexable cutting inserts. The wheels are said to satisfy the twin demands of increased component quality at ever more competitive prices.

There are nearly 100 cup-shaped wheels from 125 to 400 mm diameter and cylindrical wheels from 40 to 400 mm diameter in the product programme for use on EWAG, Coborn, Wendt and Agathon grinding machines. Tyrolit says the Skytec grinding wheels cater for the growing number of materials being used in the PCD and CBN cutting tool production. All have stringent conditions, regarding quality and geometry, along with a need for minimal chipping when the inserts are in use. The bond of Skytec PCD-Basic+ grinding wheels offers high porosity and good profile retention, while maintaining hardness. Excellent edge quality with low levels of cutting edge chipping result, says Tyrolit, typically less than 10 microns, depending on the type of PCD/CBN and grit size. Higher stock removal rates lead to a reduction in grinding times and longer intervals between dressing. This is performed using a silicon carbide wheel followed by sharpening with vitrified aluminium oxide to expose the diamond grit.
